What is pulse oximetry?

Pulse oximtrey is a non-invasive method of measuring the oxygenation of a patient's hemoglobin. A Pulse Oximeter, such as the Sequal SmartPulse Fingertip Pulse Oximeter, is placed across a thin part of the patient's body, such as a finger, and a light containing both red and infrared wavelengths is passed from one side to the other. The change of absorption is measured and used to calculate the level of oxygen in the patient's blood.

• 1. Batteries - Battery life is dependent on the quality of batteries used. Be sure that your batteries have power and are making good contact in the battery compartment
• 2. Sensor Debris - Dirt, oil, and food particles from your hands can accumulate on the sensor, so make sure that your sensor is clear
• 3. Fingernail Polish/Bandages - Anything on your fingers can inhibit the infrared light from passing through them and getting an accurate reading, especially dark or metallic fingernail polish
• 4. Blood Flow Restriction - It is best not to use the Sequal SmartPulse when using a blood pressure cuff or anything else that restricts bloodflow
